New York - Williamsburg Hamburg - Wilhelmsburg
Die gleiche stadtgeografische Situation, das gleiche Verhältnis zwischen Zentrum und Peripherie, und ein Fluss, der beide voneinander trennt. Doch was beide Orte verbindet, ist die Geschichte der Aus- und Einwanderung. Williams@Wilhelmsburg haben nicht nur den Namen gemeinsam, sondern viel mehr: Eine Geschichte, in der Einwanderung eine wichtige Rolle spielt; eine Struktur, die von Industrieansiedlung und Werften geprägt wurde, eine Gegenwart, in der soziale Brennpunkte dicht neben der neuen Kunstszene liegen. Andy Warhol, Sohn polnischer Emigranten, eröffnete hier seine erste Galerie in den 1960er Jahren. Auch in Wilhelmsburg sind Künstler auf der Suche nach günstigen Atelierräumen, die im Hamburger Zentrum schon lange nicht mehr bezahlbar sind. Aber Wilhelmsburg ist nicht Williamsburg – noch nicht.

What is striking is not only the similarity of names but also the parallels in the history of this two places: both have an economic structure based on industry and ship-building, both are blue-collar neighborhoods and both are characterized by their immigrant past. The old affinity that links places of social depression to the Bohemia has also attracted a large art scene to Williamsburg. Andy Warhol, son of Polish immigrants, opened his first art gallery here in the Sixties. In Wilhelmsburg, too, artists are looking for low-priced studios because down-town studios would bee unaffordable. But as for the artistic flair Wilhelmsburg is not like Williamsburg – not yet.

Das Ergebnis soll ein Stück „Heimatkunde“ werden, die aber ihre Berechtigung gerade in der Relativierung hat. Man versichert sich dabei nicht nur seiner eigenen historischen Wurzeln, sondern erkennt etwas Universelles: Das urbane Leben auf diesem Globus hat an jedem Ort seine besondere, mit Einwanderung verknüpfte Geschichte. Jeder Städter kann diese Geschichte mit eigenen Erfahrungen verbinden und so globales Denken entwickeln, ohne seine lokalen Wurzeln zu verleugnen.

Traces of Migration
What traces has the history of migration left on both sides of the Atlantic? Does the immigrant experience still have any meaning for the inhabitants of Williamsburg? And how does manifest itself in everyday life? We are trying to contact people whose ancestors came to New York via Hamburg and who can tell the story of migration from a double perspective: not only from the immigrants’, but also from the residents’ point of view.

Participation
This project is intended to be a kind of homeland-history, communicated within modern media. But it is meant to be more than just a look back in time. The stress is rather the on the way that the past influences and forms the present. And as the present is nothing but a continuation of the past, we can understand our own existence only if we look back to our cultural roots. Paradoxically it is this focus on the circumstances of our own life that opens up a much broader perspective: by understanding the immigrant experience of our native place we can also relate to the history of migration in other parts of the world. In this way private experience becomes the key for understanding global developments.
